Let’s be honest - teachers are not only having to navigate a challenging environment during COVID19...

It is an ongoing classroom for them dealing with youth growing up in high risk areas, influenced by unconscious behaviour such as crime and gangsterism, drug and alcohol abuse, unemployment and poverty. It is a big ask and a big task for our Teachers. 

Many find the stresses of life inside/outside school impacting their ability to be effective and fully engaged in the classroom.Our Educators are at risk to disengage from the partnership with learners and each other, and disconnecting from their purpose. The result is they can no longer hold the integrity of the educational framework. Performance is impacted. The struggle is real and highlights the importance of championing the wellbeing of our Hero's.

I like the The Responsible Individual program - it is relevant - as it is topics that we can learn from in our daily lives - both in our School and Personal lives.

As the Life Orientation Teacher I have to ensure the Students stay motivated, that their wellbeing is alright, to ensure they are responsible. The Responsible Individual helps both Students and Teachers with their approach. Because not many Teachers are equipped with different approaches - some topics are very sensitive. It helps the Teacher navigate their way in these topics - on their approach.

SmilingOne coming to our school was a good idea. SmilingOne has the opportunity to speak and approach the Students in the very context where they need help and assistance. The Students go to school for most of their Teenage years which makes it the perfect place to help them analyse things that makes up their school lives and take home what they can also use in their personal lives.

The Responsible Individual program assists Students with their value system. It is great to have help available - however it is a two way street. They cannot sit back and reach their goals, they have to be active.

The program was insightful and educational. The highlight for me was coming together as a group, sharing whatever we went through during the day. It may have been a very difficult day - concerning the Learners or the classroom situation. At the end we learn a lot from one another because we all have different ways on how we handle things concerning the classroom situations. We could learn from one another to tackle situations in a much better way.

The Change Agent has a way of summing up the session in a nutshell - when you go home, and if you face a situation during the day than there was always a remedy you can take out of that nutshell, and use that information to handle a situation with a Learner better, in a much easier way.

I have come to understand Learners much better. The Learners come from different backgrounds, different situations at home - and we as Educators do not always know. And when there is a problem in class, we want to tackle that problem head on - without understanding what was the situation at home, what did that Learner go through. Our group started to understand that if there is a Learner difficulty in class - maybe the Learner could have been going through hell at home. The Learner explodes and I as an Educator exploded in my earlier years.

The Program has opened the understanding of Ethics and Personalities for me. The mere fact that you are getting to know yourself and how to treat another person. Such engagements takes time - which in current times is not met by most but is possible. The Responsible Individual can definitely reduce dropouts. The program can be build-in as a period on the school roster. Then gather once a month where we can get feedback and hear each other out. It can even be a bonding session in school hall.

In Interview: They are so supportive of the project and the Change Agents. Mr. Taylor and Ms. Landsberg both share that SmilingOne’s approach adds a new and very important angle in improving school culture. They like to refer Students to the After-School Club classes, supporting and believing in the potential of the Students. Mr. Taylor is grateful for this as he in many cases is left with just a few options to be used to address the offence of Students. The project now serves as an intervention program at the School."
Ms Landsberg applauds the Change Agents and the TRI Program. She believes that this is the new approach that Ravensmead High School should invest in. The Students deal with Challenges that the Teachers cannot get to. The Change Agents play a pivotal role in the direction that Ravensmead High School needs. “I love the idea that the Change Agents go to the Family houses of the Students” – Ms Landsberg shares. “That is where the Change Agent also gets to see deeper aspects of the Students”.

RAVENSMEAD HIGH SCHOOL
In Interview: Ms Hendricks was very keen when we asked her if we could interview her. She happily shared that she is grateful for Franklin being the Change Agent at the school. It was clear that Franklin many times used her class for TRI exposure sessions. This assisted her to perform better in giving her subjects in class.

She shared that Franklin provided the students with opportunity to take school seriously. She said this has been a major factor in preventing students from dropping out of school. It was evident that Franklin has been working hard, formulating the TRI educational framework into the system and environment of Michausdal Senior Secondary School. He is dedicating his time to purposefully influence the school culture, both with teachers and learners.

MICHAUSDAL SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL
In Interview:  Ms Janse van Rensburg has been working closely with Franklin, since he came to Michausdal Secondary School. She shared that she would refer students to Mr Esau anytime as she has seen that his approach works.

She shares: “There was one student who were disengaged from class, his school work and he were socially disconnected with his peers. I saw him struggling and asked him if he would be open to speak to Mr Esau. When I took him to Mr Esau I could see changes over time. He started to engage and play with his Peers. The other day he asked me to give one of his teachers a chocolate for she helped him with his school work. He was shy to give it to her himself. I was so impressed that he is making social change at school which can mean so much for his confidence – become academically successful as a student. "

There has also been many students whom she referred to Franklin. She regards him as an extra support. She shares that Franklin is also a moral support for her and a person she can engage with when things get too much at school.

MICHAUSDAL SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL
In Interview: Mr Pitt shares openly about the importance of all parties (parent, teacher and student) to be well connected in the school process. And what an important role Mr Esau is playing in engaging these parties. He is also witnessing some changes in parents, teachers and students as they get more involved with each other - coming together for the benefit of the Student.

One of the Parents came to school and she shared how her husband passed away and her son saw his dad died. She thinks that it could affect him and that is why his grades were dropping. “I referred his mother to Mr Esau. Mr Esau spoke with him for 2 or 3 times. I could see him really focusing on school. He brought in a better report this quarter.”

Mr. Pitt highlighted the fact that these children can easily relate to Franklin, as he is from a similar environment and went through similar challenges.
 He shares that Franklin plays a fundamental role at the school of Michausdal and that he has full faith of his ability and his contribution towards the development of the Students.
