LUNGA'S LEGACY

DEAR COMMUNITY

As I write this, my heart is heavy - filled with both profound gratitude for this beautiful country, and deep grief.
This morning, I received devastating news: Lunga, a remarkable young man I mentored, was shot dead.
Let me share some context.
South Africa has been my greatest teacher. She taught me to break-free of a victim mentality and rise, victorious, in the face of challenge. She literally saved my life!
When I arrived here in 2006 - my bag full of loss, pain, and trauma - I was stuck in survival. But this land and her people reminded me of what truly matters: how soulful, Ubuntu-spirited connections can revive a broken heart.
This is why I do the work I do.
From prisons to boardrooms to classrooms to communities, I help people remember who they are and rise to who they can become. I walk with those who most have written off, guiding transformation where few dare to go.
Inside maximum prisons, I’ve trained inmates as coaches. I’ve witnessed men turn from gangsterism to radical accountability. They don’t just talk change - they live it. They carry tools to rebuild, and feel a sacred responsibility to serve the greater good.
I’ve collaborated with these same Change Agents in leading powerful projects in schools, reshaping the lives of teachers and learners - shifting whole school cultures.
But sustaining transformation requires support. Without it, even the most promising stories risk unraveling.
Lunga was one of those stories.
He'd been part of our SmilingOne Leadership Program for two years. He showed incredible promise. While still incarcerated, he returned to school. He was both hopeful and scared - he knew the past might catch up with him.
If I had the funds, I would have hired him into our school projects. He needed a place to land, a structure to hold him. But we couldn’t offer that - not for lack of will, but lack of resources.
At 6am this morning, his mother sent me a message: “Karina, Lunga was shot dead last night.”
My heart broke. I felt I'd failed him. We failed him - as a society.
It’s easy to say, “He chose that life.”
But the truth is: Lunga tried. He tried to rise. He nearly made it.
But change without sustained support is like planting a seed in a desert with no water within reach.
South Africa gave me a life vest when I was drowning.
Where was that support for Lunga?
I’m sharing this today not just in mourning, but as an invitation.
Let’s not let Lunga’s story be in vain. Let it be a wake-up call to invest in real, lasting change.
