From Gangsters to Leaders

🚨 From Gangsters to Leaders: SmilingOne’s Prison Program Shows Transformation in Action

With two graduations in two years, SmilingOne’s evidence-based model turns offenders into leaders who now co-facilitate new cohorts - reducing recidivism and multiplying systemic impact.

Brandvlei Maximum Prison, 19 August 2025
Inside one of South Africa’s toughest prisons, a different kind of graduation unfolded. Twelve incarcerated men walked across the stage to receive certificates - not for trade skills or external studies, but for mastering the hardest subject of all: themselves.

For the past two years, they journeyed through SmilingOne’s Circles of Change™ Academy - a values-based leadership pathway refined over nearly two decades across prisons, schools, and high-risk communities. The programme strips away masks, confronts wounds, and rebuilds dignity, guiding participants to reclaim their power and step into leadership.

This is not rehabilitation in theory. It is transformation in action.

Franklin - once incarcerated himself, now a SmilingOne Change Agent & School Project Leader - stood as living proof of what is possible, opening the ceremony with these words:

“Today is not just another day in prison. Today is a milestone. Because what you’ve been studying here is the hardest subject of all - yourselves. True power is not domination. It is honesty. True strength is not fear. It is dignity.”

At the ceremony, graduates spoke with raw honest

  • “I thought prison was just bars and walls - but I learned that prison is also in the mind. And if my mind is free, then I can truly change. I never thought I’d hold a certificate in my hands. But here I am - not just with a certificate, but with a new vision.”
  • “SmilingOne stripped me bare. It made me look at my past, the wounds I thought I buried. But when you bury pain, it rots. When you face it, you heal.”
  • “I chased gangsterism because I wanted to belong. Here, I found a different belonging. A family of brothers who lift me up when I fall.”
  • “Every day, the darkness tries to pull me back. But I choose the light. And I say to my brothers: fight with me. We will walk this road together.”
This was SmilingOne’s second graduation in two years, showing momentum building inside Brandvlei. Graduates now enter coach training and, in September 2025, will co-facilitate the enrolment of 25 new men - making transformation peer-driven, sustainable, and scalable.

Founder Karina Andersen closed with the reminder of the legacy they are building:

“SmilingOne is not just a program.
It is a movement of change.
It is a brotherhood. It is a family.
Inside every man is a seed of greatness…
One day the world will look here, at this prison, and say:
this is where men began to rise.
This is where change took root.
And I am proud beyond words.
Because you are part of my family.
And together, we will turn this light into a legacy.”

WHY IT WORKS

  • Proven: Refined over nearly two decades across prisons, schools, and high-risk communities.
  • Pathway: A lifelong curriculum of awakening leadership, keeping the student in each man alive.
  • Peer-driven: Graduates step into coach training and co-facilitate new cohorts, making change contagious.
  • Accountability: Men awaken to the cost of their choices and become shareholders in our collective wellbeing. They ask: “How can I help?”
  • Embodied: Men don’t just learn values - they live them. Through SmilingOne’s enabling platform, change is practiced until it becomes habit, skill, and leadership in action.

WHY IT MATTERS

South Africa holds untapped brilliance in the very places most overlook. Behind crime and recidivism statistics are people who never had the support, tools, or enabling platforms they needed. When that brilliance is activated, the dividends of social impact are undeniable:

  • Awakened leaders from forgotten places → coaches, mentors, role models.
  • Safer communities → reduced crime, restored trust, long-term cost savings to society
  • Healthier schools and families → breaking the school-to-prison pipeline.
  • Young people equipped → leadership tools in young hands to navigate all seasons.
  • Thriving economies → stability grows when harm reduces.
  • Generational impact → cycles of trauma end, ripples of healing continue.

CALL TO ACTION FOR IMPACT INVESTORS

The moment is now. SmilingOne calls on impact investors, CSI partners, and visionary businesses to scale this proven pathway. Invest in transformation that reduces crime, strengthens communities, and plants leaders where society least expects them.

With your partnership, today’s graduates will not only continue their own journey but step into their communities as inspiring role models, devoted fathers, and respected mentors - breaking cycles of harm and building cycles of care. They will also train tomorrow’s leaders of change, proving that transformation behind the walls can ripple outward into schools, families, and communities across South Africa.
