AUTHENTICITY: THE ULTIMATE UPGRADE FOR LEADERS AND BRANDS

Are you a brand that says it as it is?
Or do you make up stuff ?
“Ahhh… it’s just a tiny lie, a slight bend of the truth.”

I’m not writing this to name or shame, but to reflect on some big lessons from a recent engagement.

A PR lady reworked my press releases. It came back with “editorial tweaks” not aligned with the truth. A new character appeared, the vice principal was given an extra line, and suddenly it looked like a staged performance to please the crowd.

“It’s more newsworthy,” she said. “I often elaborate peoples’ quotes, changing around what they say!”

I was baffled. What has our world come to that we think bending the truth is acceptable? Is that really who we want to be? Is that what we want to model to our teams, our families, our children?

Growing up in a world of manipulation and lies, I know only too well how to tell one! This is one of the first things I put on the table when I start a new group of inmates in my leadership gyms: “Who knows how to lie?”

At first there’s hesitancy - not because they don’t know lies, but because this level of honesty is new to them. I raise my hand. More follow. “I bet I’ve got the biggest account of lies of them all!” It’s a perfect ice-breaker.

I grew up in a family where lies and manipulation were modelled daily. I learnt to do exactly the same. Copy. Paste! It wasn’t pretty, and I’m not proud of it. But it's been crucial in my journey towards authentic leadership.

Becoming a mom almost 30 years ago nudged me to take a deep, long look in the mirror. What’s my brand as a mom? What will my children learn from me? That’s when I chose to break the cycle!

Confronting the brutal facts about our less desirable versions is the toughest part of awakening - but also the most freeing. But let’s not fool ourselves - if we’ve been stuck in lies on repeat, old ways don't give in easily.

I witness it every day in my work - from prisons to boardrooms to classrooms.
Marco* - a high-ranking gangster - shared in session how he'd “almost” given up on gangster activities, serious about leaving crime. I like to tease them, especially when they’ve been in our leadership gym for a while.

“Oh, so you’re serious? But you say you’re still active.”
“No, only very little.”
“Well, Marco*… let me paint a picture. You can’t be 10% pregnant. Either you’re pregnant or you’re not! Same goes for crime ; ) There’s no grey!"
